Industry — Safety

Safety

Safety should not create more administration. Safety teams need simple ways to capture information, manage investigations, track actions and report on what matters so more time is spent keeping people safe.

In Ricky's Words

Why I enjoy working in safety

Safety teams carry a lot and get very little time to think. Most of the safety people I work with did not sign up to chase forms and chase actions, they signed up to keep people well. I enjoy this work because taking administration off a safety adviser gives them their job back, and better safety information genuinely protects people rather than just satisfying an audit.

Common Challenges

What we see most often

  • Paper-based reporting
  • Spreadsheet tracking
  • Manual incident reporting
  • Investigation delays
  • Corrective actions not followed up
  • Return-to-work administration
  • Risk registers disconnected from operations
  • Compliance reporting burden
  • Poor safety visibility
  • Safety teams spending too much time on administration

Capability 01

Business Intelligence and Reporting

Safety reporting should show exposure and control effectiveness, not just a lag count. We build reporting that makes leading indicators visible early enough to act on.

Examples

  • Hazard, near miss and incident reporting by area, crew and contractor
  • Action closure rates and overdue action ageing, visible by owner
  • Leading indicator dashboard: interactions, inspections and verifications completed
  • Critical control verification coverage against the risks that can kill
  • One safety pack for the leadership meeting, refreshed without manual assembly

KPIs that matter

KPI reference for safety

The measures we most often build for this industry, why each one matters, how it is calculated and the bands we benchmark against.

KPIWhy it mattersHow to measureWorld classBenchmarkTypical
TRIFR (Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate)Overall harm rate.Recordable injuries × 1,000,000 ÷ hours worked.≤23–89+
Action closure on time %Do we finish what we raise?Actions closed by due date ÷ actions due.≥95%80–90%60–80%
Critical control verification %Are the controls that matter working?Verifications completed ÷ verifications planned.≥95%80–90%<70%
Hazard reports per 100 workersAre people still reporting?Hazards reported ÷ headcount × 100.≥4020–35<15
Overdue action ageingIs anything drifting?Median days past due for open actions.01–1430+

Capability 02

Data Engineering, Fabric and AI Readiness

Safety data usually sits in its own system, disconnected from people, area and shift. Connecting it is what makes exposure-based analysis possible.

Examples

  • Connect the safety system to HR, roster and area structures
  • Standardise classification, risk rating and hierarchy of control coding
  • Model exposure hours so rates are correct and comparable
  • Automated data quality checks on incomplete or unclassified records
  • One governed safety history across sites and contractors

Capability 03

Power Platform and Business Applications

Reporting a hazard should take under 5 minutes. We build capture that people will actually use, and workflow that proves the action was closed.

Examples

  • Design and development of a Safety Management System aligned with Australian WorkSafe legislation and industry best practice
  • Mobile hazard and near miss capture with photo and location
  • Take 5, JSA and pre-start capture with verification recorded
  • Action assignment, escalation and closure workflow with evidence attached
  • Inspection and audit apps with automatic scheduling
  • Automated alerts for overdue critical actions

Capability 04

Continuous Improvement and Business Process Improvement

We simplify systems and remove unnecessary complexity so teams can spend more time managing risk and less time managing process.

Examples

  • Review processes and remove unnecessary steps, duplication, and administrative burden
  • Simplify forms, workflows, and reporting systems to make them easier to use
  • Improve how risks, actions, and improvements are identified, prioritised, and tracked
  • Streamline decision-making so issues are addressed faster and more effectively
  • Focus time and resources on managing critical risks and delivering measurable improvements
